It had been many nights since visitors had visited the monastery. The priest walked the halls warily, their footsteps echoing endlessly through halls. The month of September passed quickly, not a single came, not a single letter was received, and not a single prayer was heard. All the priest decided to leave, why stay if there was nobody to attend to? Only the head Priest stayed, believing the monastery shouldn’t be left to stand the test of time alone. Something had not been quite right… he knew the people had left because of something else. What it was? He wasn’t sure. But the Father felt as if something was wrong, something didn’t feel right. Night after night, he went to the reading hall, to try and set his mind at ease. But it only managed to do completely the opposite. He felt as if he wasn’t alone. Every time he sat down and fixed his glance at something, he felt as if somebody was walking up to him from behind. He would think it was one of the monastery priests, turning around he saw nobody. They left days ago, he thought to himself. Every night he changed rooms after that. But the feeling kept coming back to him, each time worse. Night by night he secluded himself even deeper in the monastery, until one night he found himself in the last room he had not spent the night in. He lit the candles near the entrance as he walked in, trying not to think about it, about the thing that had haunted every single night of his life for the past month of October. He stood in the center of the room and looked down at the table next to him, it was the book he had read on the first night alone in the monastery. He passed his hand over it gently.
The wind stopped.
The air didn’t move.
He stood still for a second. But he was compelled to look back, slowly turning his head, trembling. A sudden wind came and blew out the candles. The priest gasped. It’s just the wind, he thought. But that same gust of wind seems to turn around and as soon as it passed by the candles, the candles lighted themselves, blue flames sparling in the dark night. The priest took a step back from where he stood, facing the dark entrance. He heard a rasping noise coming closer, closer, closer to the door.
You’re right, you are not alone…
